YUYUN’S JOURNEY TO RECOVERY

In late 2024, Yuyun’s health took a significant turn for the worse. On Island #0, where she had lived with her fellow orangutan Jeffrey for a long time, Yuyun appeared weak and had lost her appetite. This behaviour was very unusual for her, as she was typically a voracious eater who finished all the food provided by the technicians. Noticing this concerning change, the medical team at Samboja Lestari quickly conducted a thorough examination to determine the cause of Yuyun’s declining condition.
Previously, Yuyun had faced numerous health challenges, including suffering from Orangutan Respiratory Disease Syndrome (ORDS) and exhibiting abnormal behaviour, such as frequently regurgitating her food. Despite her challenging health history, Yuyun adapted well to life on the island, leading a peaceful existence alongside Jeffrey. Although they rarely spent time together, both orangutans coexisted harmoniously without issues until the recent decline.
Worrisome results
The examination revealed that Yuyun had tested positive for Burkholderia cepacia, a bacteria that can cause serious infections, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems. Additionally, Yuyun was diagnosed with anaemia. The medical team promptly responded by administering intensive treatment, including multivitamins, digestive health supplements, and Sangobion as an iron supplement. Considering Yuyun’s abnormal behaviour of frequently regurgitating food, the technicians also adjusted her diet by avoiding soft-textured foods to prevent her from vomiting.
Adaptation to a new environment
After undergoing intensive treatment for approximately two months, Yuyun was declared free from infection. With her health now stable, Yuyun was finally ready to return to the sanctuary island. However, this time, the technicians brought her to Island #12A due to ongoing construction on Island #0.
Island #12A is one of the sanctuary islands designated for orangutans we cannot release back into the wild. The island covers an area of about 0.6 hectares, providing a suitable habitat for Yuyun to live freely under supervision.
A familiar face amidst the changes
Upon arriving at Island #12A, Yuyun was welcomed by Jeffrey, who had been moved there earlier by the BOS team. Even though she was in a new environment, Yuyun seemed happy and began to adjust well to her new surroundings. Jeffrey’s familiar presence undoubtedly helped Yuyun adapt, providing support during this transitional period. She has resumed her daily activities on the island with renewed energy and a more supportive environment for her health.
Yuyun’s journey highlights the importance of meticulous medical attention and the support of the animal welfare team. From the treatment phase to her return to the island, Yuyun has faced many challenges. Still, now she can enjoy her life in the open again, symbolizing strength and resilience despite all limitations.
Way to go, Yuyun!
