A NEW RESCUED BABY

In collaboration with BKSDA Central Kalimantan, the BOS team has rescued another baby orangutan.

On August 12, 2024, the Nyaru Menteng Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre received a report about a baby orangutan in Tumbang Samba Village, located in Katingan Regency, Central Kalimantan. The female orangutan, estimated to be around ten months old, was discovered by a resident who works as a deer hunter. Before being confiscated by authorities, the baby orangutan had been kept as a pet for about a month before being handed over to the Central Kalimantan BKSDA office.

Thorough health examination
The following day, on August 13, 2024, a joint wildlife rescue team from Nyaru Menteng and the Central Kalimantan BKSDA travelled to retrieve the baby orangutan, whom they named Selfie. Upon their arrival at the rehabilitation centre, Selfie underwent a thorough health examination to assess her condition.

As a baby orangutan who had been in close contact with humans, the veterinary team placed her under a three-month quarantine period. This step was crucial to closely monitoring her health and preventing the spread of any diseases. After completing the quarantine, the BOS team introduced Selfie to the Nursery Group, where she began interacting with other baby orangutans.

Since being in Nyaru Menteng, Selfie has made significant progress and loves to climb.

Lingering sense of anxiety
Although Selfie’s condition is now stable, her facial expressions frequently reveal a lingering sense of anxiety. Fortunately, the dedicated surrogate mothers at Nyaru Menteng know how to care for vulnerable orangutans like Selfie. They ensure she receives the love and attention she needs to grow and adapt.

Selfie’s story highlights the challenges that orphaned orangutans face due to conflicts with humans. It also emphasizes the importance of rescue and rehabilitation efforts in giving these animals a second chance at life in the wild. We hope that Selfie continues to grow stronger and more independent, paving the way for her eventual return to her natural habitat.
