A NEW LITTLE STUDENT
The BOS Foundation has once again rescued a juvenile orangutan in a collaborative effort. The rescue team picked up the young female in mid-September 2023.
When Basar saw the team for the first time, she showed that she was afraid. However, she happily consumed fruits during the long drive to the Samboja Lestari Rehabilitation Centre and grew slightly more comfortable.
Still confused and hesitant upon arrival, the team immediately brought the little female to the Baby House for a health check, which turned out to be quite challenging: Basar continued to resist, requiring multiple persons to control her. They had to briefly hold her limbs while the veterinary team swiftly examined her and took blood samples.
The health check revealed that Basar weighs around 12 kilograms and is estimated to be about 4 to 6 years old based on her teeth. She has no injuries or deformities, although she appeared thin.
Basar’s health has been in flux
Sadly, over the last three months, Basar faced a health setback. Faecal examinations had confirmed that she was positive for Balantidium, a parasite impacting her digestion and producing diarrhoea. Our veterinarians administered treatment and antibiotics, but unfortunately, in November, Basar started to experience constipation. Therefore, the vet team treated her again with a change in diet and the provision of medicine.
Fortunately, Basar’s health is slowly but surely improving. We are confident that she will soon be able to join the other orangutans at Forest School, a crucial part of her rehabilitation journey, where she will learn essential survival skills.
Rest assured that we will be with her every step of the way as she adjusts to her new life.
