A Grassy Adventure

Welcome to another thrilling day at the Nyaru Menteng Forest School! Today, we’re hanging out with our favourite cheeky orangutans—Paulinus, Bumi, and their playful pals—for some epic fun with fresh-cut grass!

The youngsters stumbled upon a massive pile of freshly cut grass. Paulinus and Bumi dive headfirst into the grassy goodness. They adore burying themselves in the grass, feeling the excellent, soft blades tickling their hair. Paulinus is having a blast rolling around and covering himself completely. It’s like his own secret grassy hideout!

And here come Bumi, Monyo, and Niniek, making it rain grass. They love tossing it into the air and watching it flutter like magical confetti. Playing with grass isn’t just a ton of fun—it’s also fantastic enrichment for these young orangutans. It helps them develop their motor and sensory skills and keeps them active and engaged.

From grass trimming to playtime fun
Interestingly, the lush feathery green wasn’t intended as a toy or enrichment for them. The grass in the playground area at Nyaru Menteng had grown quite tall, so it was time for our team to trim it. However, the freshly cut grass caught the attention of the young orangutans who had just returned from Forest School. And they couldn’t resist playing with it.

Bumi and Monyo even got a bit cheeky with their caretakers, playfully tossing piles of grass at them. They looked so happy. Even when it was time for their milk, bits of grass still covered their bodies. They looked like little soldiers in camouflage.

Intelligent and creative like human children
Like human children, young orangutans love to play and explore new things, showing their intelligence and creativity. So, what started as a simple task of trimming the grass turned into an unexpected playtime adventure for our clever and curious orangutans.

Moments like these remind us of the joy and wonder of working with these fantastic creatures.

Did you know you can join Bumi and Monyo on their rehabilitation journey through our adoption program?

How Can You Help

There are lots of ways you can support orangutans and help ensure the survival of this precious ape.

Adopt an Orangutan

Adopt an Orangutan

Orangutans are endangered and at risk of extinction. Habitat destruction results in hundreds of orphaned orangutans, who rely on our care every year. You can help by adopting one. Their dedicated ‘nannies’ teach them everything they need to know for when it’s time to release them back to the wild. You can follow their progress through Forest School.
